AEO services: answer engine optimisation for direct answers

In short

AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is the practice of shaping your content so search features and assistants can quote it as a direct answer. Our AEO services cover question research, answer-first writing, suitable structured data and clear entity information. They suit businesses in India and abroad whose customers ask specific questions before choosing a supplier.

What is AEO?

AEO (answer engine optimisation) means writing and structuring web content so that an answer engine can extract a short, accurate reply to a question and attribute it to your page. Answer engines include Google featured snippets and "People also ask" boxes, voice assistants, and AI assistants that respond with a sentence rather than a list of links.

Where traditional SEO asks "will this page rank?", AEO asks "if someone asks this exact question, is our page the clearest, most trustworthy place to take the answer from?" It is a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement. A page still has to be crawlable and indexed before any answer engine can use it.

The problem AEO solves

Business owners tell us they rank on the first page for important searches, yet clicks are falling. Often the reason is that the results page now answers the question itself. A snippet, an answer box or an AI summary appears at the top, and the source it quotes is a competitor, a marketplace or a generic blog, not the business that actually provides the service.

The pages themselves are usually the cause. Answers are buried halfway down a long paragraph, headings say "Our approach" instead of the question a customer asks, and key facts such as service areas, eligibility or process steps are scattered across several pages. Answer engines prefer content where the question and a clear answer sit close together. AEO reorganises your content so that is true.

How answer engines pick an answer

No search engine publishes its exact rules, so nobody can say precisely why one answer wins. From public guidance and from watching results, a few patterns are consistent. The engine first needs to trust the page enough to rank it reasonably well. It then looks for a passage that matches the question closely, answers it in the first sentence or two, and can stand alone without the surrounding text.

Format matters too. A definition suits a short paragraph, a process suits numbered steps, and a comparison suits a list or table. Clear headings that mirror the question help the engine find the passage. Consistent facts about your organisation help it decide that you are a reliable source. AEO work improves each of these inputs; the engine still makes the final choice.

What our AEO services include

The written scope for each engagement lists the pages covered and the deliverables. A typical scope draws from the following.

  • Question research from Search Console queries, "People also ask" results, sales and support conversations, and enquiry forms.
  • A question map that assigns each important question to one page, so pages do not compete with each other.
  • Answer-first rewrites: a 40 to 60 word direct answer near the top, followed by detail, examples and caveats.
  • Question-style headings, with steps, lists and tables used where the answer naturally takes that form.
  • FAQ sections built from real customer questions, not padding.
  • Structured data in JSON-LD where it is appropriate, such as FAQPage for genuine FAQs, HowTo-style steps where the content is a real procedure, and Organization and Service markup.
  • Entity clarity: consistent company name, location, services and author details across the site and your main profiles.
  • Tracking of featured snippet and answer appearances where tools allow.

How we run an AEO project

Discovery comes first. We talk to you over video about what customers ask before they buy, review your Search Console data for question-style queries, and look at which answer features already appear for those questions. That produces a written scope covering the pages, the question map and the structured data, with a fixed quote agreed before any changes are made.

We then work in two-week cycles. Each cycle rewrites or creates a small group of pages, adds or corrects markup, and validates the structured data before release. Code changes are tested and reviewed. At the end of each cycle we show you the updated pages and what we have seen in the data so far. Because answer features update unevenly, we look at trends over several cycles rather than reacting to a single week.

How AEO is measured

Measurement in AEO is less precise than in classic SEO, and we say so up front. Google Search Console shows impressions, clicks and positions for question queries, and changes in click-through rate often signal that a snippet has been won or lost. We record featured snippet and "People also ask" appearances for your priority questions through manual checks and rank-tracking tools where they support it.

For AI assistants, we track citations and brand mentions where tools allow, and we run a repeatable set of test questions to note whether your pages are referenced. These checks show direction, not certainty, because assistants vary their answers. We do not guarantee that any engine will quote your page. We report what we changed, what we observed and what we will try next.

Who AEO suits

AEO is most useful where buyers research with questions before they enquire. A parent asks how school admissions work, a patient asks whether a clinic offers a particular consultation online, a property buyer asks what documents are needed, and an operations manager asks how an ERP handles multiple warehouses. Healthcare, education, real estate, logistics, manufacturing and finance businesses all see this pattern, as do startups and SaaS founders explaining a new category.

It is less useful for businesses whose customers search only by brand name or buy on impulse. During discovery we check whether question searches matter in your market before recommending AEO work.

Tools, cost and timing

We use Google Search Console for query and performance data, Screaming Frog to audit headings and existing markup across the site, Lighthouse to make sure rewritten pages stay fast, and JSON-LD for structured data, validated with Google testing tools before release.

Cost depends on how many pages are in scope, how much rewriting is needed versus new content, the state of your existing structured data, and whether we have direct access to edit the site. The fixed quote follows discovery. Timing is hedged: markup and rewrites can be picked up within weeks of recrawling, but winning answer features is not guaranteed and often takes several months of steady work.

AEO vs SEO

SEO aims to get a page ranked and clicked in search results. AEO aims to get a specific passage chosen as the answer to a specific question. SEO deals with crawling, speed, links and overall relevance; AEO deals with question coverage, answer placement, formatting and markup. The two overlap heavily, and AEO rarely works on a site with weak SEO foundations.

There is a trade-off worth understanding. A direct answer can sometimes reduce clicks for very simple questions, because the searcher already has what they need. For businesses, the value is in being seen as the source on questions that lead to an enquiry. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) goes further, covering how AI tools assemble longer summaries from several sources.

FAQ

Questions we are asked

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO helps a page rank and earn clicks in search results, while AEO helps a specific passage get chosen as the direct answer to a question. SEO focuses on technical health, relevance and authority. AEO focuses on question research, answer-first writing, formatting and structured data. AEO builds on SEO, so weak technical foundations will hold both back.

Can you guarantee a featured snippet?

No. Google and other answer engines decide which passage to show, and they change those choices often. We improve the inputs they rely on: clear questions, concise answers, sensible structure, valid markup and consistent facts about your business. We then track snippet appearances and Search Console data so you can see whether the changes are working.

Does FAQ schema still help?

FAQ structured data can still help search engines understand a page, but Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of sites. We add FAQPage markup only where the page has genuine questions and answers, and we never use it to pad content. The bigger benefit usually comes from the clearly written question and answer itself.

How do you find the questions my customers ask?

We combine several sources. Search Console shows the question queries already bringing impressions to your site. "People also ask" results show related questions. Your sales team, enquiry forms and support emails show what real buyers want to know. We merge these into one question map and assign each question to a single page.

How long before AEO changes have an effect?

Rewritten pages and new markup are usually picked up within a few weeks, once search engines recrawl them. Whether a page then wins an answer feature depends on competition and on how the engine judges the content, so results typically build over several months. We report monthly on observed changes rather than promising a date.

Will AEO help my business appear in voice search?

It can improve your chances, because voice assistants often read out short, direct answers taken from well-structured pages. Clear answers, consistent business details and a complete Google Business Profile all help. However, each assistant chooses its own sources, and voice results are hard to track at scale, so we treat voice as a possible benefit rather than a measured outcome.
